SCI Fi Unleashes The Wolves of War

WarWolves-MichaelWorth Vampires. They’re so last year. This (despite what the Chinese calendar might say) is the year of the wolf. From the much-talked-about remake of The Wolf Man to the recently announced Bitches, werewolves are in very much in fashion. Which is why SCI FI Channel picked up the TV rights to the indie movie War Wolves from former TV hunk, Michael Worth.

Now when I say ‘former,’ that’s simply a reference to his heyday as one of the stars of the 1993 series Acapulco H.E.A.T., cause he still looks pretty good to me. I spent time with Michael on the set of one of his movies back in the day and he was friendly and charming and I’m glad to see he’s going strong not only as an actor but as a producer and director.

All Hail the New Who

As you’ve undoubtedly heard, David Tennant is leaving Doctor Who and in his place will be a 26 year-old, relatively unknown actor named Matt Smith (you can see him here). Since the announcement was made, great debates have popped up all over the fandom - is he too young? Is he too unknown? Is he exactly the kind of fresh blood the franchise needed to stay afloat? Everybody’s got an opinion — even when they have ‘no opinion’ which is the stance of our guest poster, author Keith DeCandido.

Take it away, Keith. . .

*   *   *   *   *   *

I am now going say something that violates all the rules of the Internet and blogging.

I have no opinion on the casting of Matt Smith as the Doctor.

Tonight on Clone Wars: Dooku Captured

Tonight you’ll get a different look at Separatist leader Count Dooku, when Anakin and Obi-Wan attempting to capture him, discover the Sith Lord has already been kidnapped by intergalactic pirates.

Director Jesse Yeh says the episode reveals more insight into Count Dooku’s descent from Jedi Knight to his lofty place within the ranks of those wielding the dark side of the Force.

“I have always been interested in the drama behind this particular character,” Yeh explains. “He thinks realistically, and has a solid mind. The actions he takes are always so direct and straight forward.

“I sense that deep down, Dooku holds a sort of emotional connection with the Jedi,” Yeh says. “I’ve always been interested in the drama behind him. Dooku thinks realistically, he has a solid mind, and the actions he takes are very direct and straightforward.

“In a way, he’s almost pathetic. His mind is constantly being twisted by his pride, which is what originally led him to the dark side. Because of his pride, he doesn’t realize he has turned into exactly the sort of monster that he once fought against. From his perspective, he is not doing anything different from what he did when he was still a Jedi. He’s just trying to save the universe – but this time from what he sees as a corrupt Republic. In the end, he’s become just another expendable pawn of the true evil.”

Yeh said Dooku’s position as a prisoner in “Dooku Captured” provided a dramatic and animation challenge. “Dooku is no longer in control of the situation, do we had to spend some time trying to figure out how to animate this ‘tamed’ Dooku.”

Twilight Zone Getting Its Own Stamp

Rod Serling

I was raised on Twilight Zone, so I’m quite excited about this development. Variety tells us the Postal Service is working on a series of stamps commemorating the golden age of television. The Early TV Memories series will launch August 11 in Los Angeles and includes stamps honoring I Love Lucy, classic game show You Bet Your Life, and yes, the Twilight Zone.

Variety said the stamps will begin at the current 42 cent price point but remember, there’s a postal price increase coming in May. With more and more companies offering ways to pay bills and complete other transactions online, the Postal Service is pushing the collector’s value of stamps heavily. I’m very stoked about Twilight Zone stamps and can’t wait to see what episodes and/or moments they decide to immortalize.

Mike (Justin Bruening) must stop the spread of a computer virus that threatens a total global meltdown. The job gets much harder when KITT (voiced by Val Kilmer) is infected. Meanwhile, Mike’s jealousy begins to show when Sarah (Deanna Russo) reconnects with an old flame (guest star Jeffrey Pierce, “The Nine”), who may be the key to solving the latest mission.

Amazon Goofs on Battlestar Webisodes

Cylons Viper Image Sy Fy Portal reports that Amazon.com released all but the final webisode in the current Battlestar Galactica story arc sometime over the weekend. Amazon was supposed to air a follow-up release but somewhere the schedule got out of whack, with the popular retail site airing several episodes before SCI FI Channel’s site did.

That, of course, put them all over YouTube. We can’t link to those, since they kind of aren’t supposed to have aired yet. The webisodes have been the subject of some debate in the BSG community because they reveal a same-sex relationship.

Fourth Indy Movie Coins New Phrase

indy-poster-thumb Oh Indiana, we begged you to stay retired. Now the fourth installment of your famed film adventures has coined a whole new “jump the shark” style phrase: nuking the fridge.

This turn of phrase comes from the Indiana Jones’ sequel’s most implausible moment (which is saying something in a movie about alien crystal skulls with superpowers) namely, when Indy survives a nuclear blast by locking himself in a lead-lined refrigerator. Yahoo Movies’ Jonathan Chow chronicles the fridge incident and some other really silly movie moments in a feature today.

Stargate Atlantis: Vegas, Baby

When most people watch TV, they don’t give a lot of thought to the camera angles, the colors, the music or the pace. But all of these things together give a show its signature style, a style you probably aren’t even aware of until they take it away.

To that, I give you Stargate Atlantis: Vegas. From the first few moments of this, second to the last episode, I began thinking of it as CSI: Atlantis. So imagine my surprise when I found out that was what the production staff had labeled it early on in the process.

The story follows Detective John Sheppard as he investigates a series of bizarre murders in the desert outside of Las Vegas. He’s thinking basic serial killer but starts to think otherwise when government types (ie FBI Special Agent Woolsey and a slicker, secretive version of Rodney McKay) get in on the hunt. Turns out there’s a Wraith running loose on the planet and other than the killing thing, he’s assimilated rather nicely (and I must say, he looks quite fine in those jeans).

If the time-honored comic book question of Who Watches The Watchmen is asked, the answer could turn out to be: No one will, at least not anytime soon. One of the most hotly anticipated films of 2009 is in release limbo after a U.S. District Court judge has ruled that 20th Century Fox has the right to distribute the film.

The problem there is that Warner Bros. is the company planning to release the movie in March. E! Online reports that Fox sued Warner in February, alleging Warner hadn’t obtained all the rights from producer Lawrence Gordon. Judge Gary Feess agrees and now the pressure is on Warner to hash something out with Fox before one of the most hyped films of the year misses its target date.
