The 4400 Recap: Episode 2.12 “Fifth Page”

by Alexandra on March 20th, 2007

Episode Name: Fifth Page
Episode Number: 2.12
Air Date: August 21, 2005

After Tom and Kyle help Alana move her last box into the house, Alana mistakenly asks Kyle to write her a prescription, but then realizes that it’s the Kyle in the “other reality” that is a doctor and can write prescriptions.

At NTAC medical, Diana notices that the fifth page of Maia’s medical report is missing, and the doctor says that he has been training a new nurse. The doctor tells Diana that Maia is suffering from a rare form of pneumonia.

Shawn and Lily talk about the illness that has befallen him and is keeping him from healing. He asks Lily to reschedule his healing appointments, and to not let anyone know that he cannot heal. She urges him to see a doctor. After she leaves, he looks in the mirror and sees that the rash has spread to his upper chest and over his collar bone area.

Other 4400 returnees all over the world are beginning to fall ill. NTAC is trying to determine the specifics of the disease, such as if its contagious and what to do. Unbeknownst to them, Dennis Ryland returns to NTAC as the temporary divisional leader, and announces that he plans to make sure that all 4400 returnees in their area are to be tested. Tom and Diana both seem happy to see Ryland, and he comes at a time when NTAC is in need of leadership, as Nina is still in the hospital recovering from the gun shot.

Tom and Dennis have some small talk, and talk about Nina being back in a week or two. Ryland reveals that he felt he was promoted out of the game when he had to leave the Pacific Northwest division. He also revealed that he’s still “preaching the gospel” of Highland Beach, reminding Tom that he’s still on the side of the 4400 returnees.

At the 4400 center, Richard is surprised that Lily is checking over Isabelle to see if she’s been “tampered with” after they pick her up from the daycare. Matthew realizes that Shawn has also contracted the same illness that the other 4400 returnees have right now.

Kyle’s curiosities (and guilt?) get the best of him as he goes over to the house of the man who’s been charged with Jordan Collier’s murder. Kyle hides his true identity so that he can befriend and help the girlfriend of the man and her young brother. Someone has vandalized their home by spray painting the word “murderer” on the front door and flattening their car tires. He is eventually found out.

Alana has another incident of slipping into the other reality when she shows up at The 4400 Center believing that it’s the Collier Museum and that she has a meeting there. Tom is called and he takes her over to the NTAC medical. She has developed the rash also.

NTAC notes that’s 1 in 5 of all returnees are sick. Ryland announces that the government wants all 4400 returnees put into quarantine, sick or not, because they don’t know if the disease will spread. NTAC has the job of bringing in all the 4400s to quarantine if they don’t comply. Tom and Diana both are troubled by this news.

Ryland assures Tom and Diana that although Washington believes they are fighting a war against the 4400s in some respects, he knows the quarantine will only be temporary so that doctors can find out exactly what is causing the illness.

Diana shows up to visit Maia and sees that the fifth page of her medical report has made its way back onto the clipboard. She notices that on the page, there’s an entry marked out, and the doctor states that a test was duplicated, and they marked out one of the entries.

Lily has a heart-to-heart talk with her ex, who says that he and Heidi are worried about her, Richard and the baby. Tom and Diana explain to the Matthew the order by the government for all 4400 returnees to return to quarantine, and of course he balks at the idea. Matthew then says that he has no problem with the 4400 center issuing a recommendation for all ill returnees to seek medical attention at NTAC, but that urging others who are not ill may be an issue. When Tom asks where Shawn is, Matthew tells him that Shawn is attending to urgent business. Diana notes that the war Collier predicted seemed to be coming to fruition.

Shawn decides to put himself into quarantine and Richard is asked to stand in temporarily to lend leadership to the 4400 center. Camp Dekker Quarantine Facility looks eerily like a place that can’t be good for anyone. Shawn is then put into quarantine and meets Maia. They both find some comfort in each other’s plight.

Richard makes a statement to the press on behalf of the 4400 center urging returnees who are sick to seek medical attention, but that ones who are not may want to consider the difficulty of stepping out of quarantine. As NTAC watches on television, Ryland angrily notes that in ten hours, they will be rounding up errant returnees.

Dr. Kevin Burkhoff shows up at NTAC to collaborate with the doctor and share notes on how they can find a cure for the returnees. Unfortunately, the NTAC medical records are classified. Dr. Burkhoff notes his objection to this, and leaves. Shortly afterwards, Diana and Tom convince Marco to break into the records and get them so they can share them with Dr. Burkhoff. Marco agrees, but notes that he is afraid to lose his job by breaking into classified government records. They all agree that it’s strange that hundreds of people are sick and that the government should want help from anyone to find a cure.

Lily follows as Ruth takes Isabelle into a locked room. Richard uses his security access to break into the room and they find that Isabelle is hooked up to wires and being poked and prodded by doctors as Matthew stares on. Matthew tells Richard and Lily that they were doing the tests to determine exactly “what” Isabelle is, and that she is the “rosetta stone” for what happened to all the 4400s.

Richard and Lily both warn that they’ll leave the center, and then Matthew reminds them that in two hours, NTAC will be knocking down the door to round them and the rest of the returnees up to cart off to quarantine. Richard pauses, and ultimately tells Lily that they should consider staying for now.

Tom visits Alana in quarantine. Marco shows up at the center and gives the “secret” medical records to Dr. Burkhoff, and also asks him for a job since he knows he’ll be out of a job for giving away national secrets.

Richard and Lily decide that going into quarantine is not the best thing for Isabelle. Richard notes that Isabelle has connections between the right and left hemisphere of her brain that have never been seen before. They are both scared that they’ll lose Isabelle forever if they end up in quarantine, and that just taking off won’t work since the government has declared marshal law on 4400s who do not surrender to be quarantined.

Ryland, NTAC officers and fully-armed tactical support show up at the center to take custody of the returnees at 1900 hours. They find that all the returnees have left the center, and Matthew is there to tell them he has no idea where they went. 4400s are secretly dispersed to safe houses throughout the world for now (houses that Jordan Collier purchased when he was alive).

Tom and Diana meet with Dr. Burkhoff and he reveals that there is a synthetic substance present in the blood of every 4400, called “promicin inhibitor”. He said that the substance is gathering in their lymph nodes and compromising their immune system. He gave them back the medical records he got from Marco. He stressed that the government knew all along about the promicin inhibitor.

Lily takes Isabelle, leaves the safe house, and asks her ex-husband to take them both someplace safe.

Tom and Diana go back to NTAC and study the medical records, and they realize that every returnee was given promicin inhibitor at every NTAC medical check up, and that it was noted on the fifth page of every report. Diana notes that it was the government who made the returnees sick.
